What is Tinplate Packaging?

Common Manufacturing Processes and Applications of Tinplate Cans

Tinplate cans—commonly referred to as "iron cans" or "tin boxes"—are containers manufactured from tinplate. Tinplate consists of an iron sheet with a thin layer of tin electroplated onto its surface to provide a protective barrier. Generally, to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the metal packaging, decorative printing is applied; these are commonly known as "printed tin cans." Below, we will explore the common manufacturing processes and various applications associated with tinplate cans.

I. Manufacturing Processes for Tinplate Cans

1.  Printing Process: Since these tinplate containers are often used for food-grade packaging, a protective coating is applied to the surface after printing. For the interior of the tin cans, a food-grade "gold lacquer" is applied; for the exterior, the printed surface is coated with a special transparent varnish—such as a glossy or matte finish—to protect the printed design.

2.  Stamping Process: Due to the excellent ductility of tinplate, molds can be utilized to form containers in a wide variety of shapes—including round, square, and irregular (custom-shaped)tin cans. Additionally, embossing or debossing techniques can be applied to the exterior surface to enhance the visual design and tactile appeal of the tin box.

II. Applications of Tinplate Cans

Based on their specific practical uses, tinplate containers are typically categorized into various types, such as: mooncake tin cans, savings banks/coin banks tins, candle tin cans, DVD cases, chocolate tin boxes, tea tin cans, coffee tin cans, biscuit tin cans, health supplement tin containers, cosmetic tins, tins with carrying handles, airtight storage tins, milk powder tin cans, wine tins, Christmas tins, gift tin cans, tinplate pails/buckets, badges, coasters, tin toys, music boxes, cigarette cases, stationery boxes, CD cases, and various custom-shaped containers and molds.

When ordinary materials are used for storage tin containers, exposure to light can trigger and accelerate the oxidation of the foods, thereby diminishing its nutritional value and potentially generating harmful substances.

More critically, it degrades fat-soluble vitamins—particularly Vitamins D and A. Furthermore, atmospheric oxygen promotes the oxidation of dietary fats, reducing protein bioavailability and destroying vitamins. In contrast, tinplate offers opacity and creates an airtight barrier against the atmosphere; consequently, utilizing tinplate metal packaging for oil containers represents the optimal choice for food packaging.

For Paint cans and Chemical Storage Cans(round tin cans, rectangular tin cans, square tin buckets and irregular tin cans), tinplate packaging is the ideal choice due to its robust composition, superior protective qualities, resistance to deformation, shock resistance, and fire resistance.

For aerosol cans and various general-purpose containers, tinplate cans capable of with standing high temperatures and high pressure are employed, making them particularly well-suited for high-pressure filling applications such as aerosol sprays.

The application of tinplate has now expanded significantly into the realm of high-to-mid-range food packaging; indeed, tinplate containers for tea, mooncakes, and various other food products are now ubiquitous. Given its exceptional printing capabilities and eco-friendly nature, tinplate has garnered widespread popularity across diverse industries.

The above serves as an overview regarding the common manufacturing processes and applications of tinplate cans. As is widely known, the applications of tinplate are remarkably extensive—food pacakging, seasoning packaging, milk powder cans packaging, aerosol cans packaging, gift tin cans packaging, chemical cans packaging and so on.
